ARTH 373 - African American Art and Architecture

Three hours lecture per week
Recommended: Junior Standing and successful completion of Golden Four GE Areas (A1, A2, A3, B4)
Explores African American visual and material culture focusing on genesis and diversity in artistic and architectural traditions. Introduces historical movements, politics, cultural trends, and influences on African American art and identity. Topics include the role of art, politics of identity, history and counter-narratives, representation and stereotypes, the role of institutions and collectors, visual language, and display practices.
