The B.A. in Spanish-English Translation and Interpretation equips students with the essential skills necessary to excel in this dynamic field. It is ideally tailored for heritage speakers of Spanish and learners of Spanish as a second language who demonstrate at least an intermediate proficiency in Spanish. Within the translation curriculum, students delve into translation theory and engage in extensive hands-on practice encompassing both general and specialized translation, as well as transcreation and localization. The program places particular emphasis on the proficient use of technology-assisted translation tools available in the industry. The interpretation component prepares students for the specific demands of the medical field. This includes training in consecutive interpretation, sight translation, and the development of cultural competence, alongside other key proficiencies. Students have the opportunity to participate in hands-on, real-world translation and interpretation projects facilitated by local community partners whenever feasible.
Students must successfully complete all required courses for the major with an overall average grade of C+ or better.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate proficiency in translating general and semi-specialized tests in various domains and in a variety of translation contexts from English to Spanish and vice versa.
- Demonstrate basic understanding of translation principles, techniques, and text features relevant in the translation decision-making process.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of common computer-assisted translation tools.
- Demonstrate proficiency in different modes of interpretation (simultaneous, consecutive, sight interpretation), standards of practice, roles of the interpreter, ethics, and cultural competency.
