The online Master of Arts in Early Childhood Studies prepares professionals to lead in early care and education contexts for children from birth through age eight based on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles. Through coursework and research, students develop advanced and specialized knowledge about culturally, linguistically, and accessible pedagogies, assessment, diversity of families, community partnerships, leadership, advocacy, social/emotional guidance, and early literacy. Careful attention is given to children’s funds of knowledge, connections with the natural world, and the importance of outdoor learning environments. Multilingual learners and children with special needs are at the center of our program.
Admission Requirements
1. Application (fall admission only)
2. BA in Early Childhood Studies, Child Development, Human Development, Family Studies or closely related field.
3. One year of teaching experience in early childhood settings or evidence of experience working with children birth through age 8 in different early childhood settings or teaching permit from any state.
4. Resume or CV.
5. Essay about why they are interested in getting a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Studies and how their experience has prepared them to be early childhood educators in a socially just society. The essay should be one page single spaced with one inch margins saved as pdf.
6. Two letters of reference from faculty or professional supervisors.
NOTE: In order to remain in the program, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (B or better). Progress in meeting this requirement will be reviewed at the end of each semester for each student. Students not meeting the requirements should consult with the program coordinator and/or the department chair of the Early Childhood Studies.
