Requirements for the Major in Spanish - 41-49 units


A minimum grade of C- will be required in all courses applied to the Spanish major.

Lower Division Requirements - 8-16 units


Students must complete one series (8 units) of second-year Spanish courses, either SPAN 201 and 202 or SPAN 211 and SPAN 212.

Students who enter the Spanish program with the equivalent of first-year, college-level Spanish in high school or a community college may have satisfied the SPAN 101 and SPAN 102 requirement. For more information, see the Spanish Program Faculty Advisor or the following webpages:

Heritage speakers are encouraged to enroll in SPAN 211  and SPAN 212 .  Higher level speakers may begin at SPAN 301  or SPAN 302   with faculty advisor approval.

 

Upper Division Requirements - 33 units


All Spanish majors must complete at least 12 units of 400 - level courses with a SPAN prefix.

Core - 21 units


All students must take courses as listed from each of the following categories.

Additional General Education & other Graduation Requirements


To graduate, students must complete 120 units minimum (40 units must be upper division), including the following General Education  (GE) and Graduation Requirements :

  • Additional lower division GE Area A-E requirements not met within major
  • American Institutions Requirement
  • Language Requirement (C- or better grade)
  • Multicultural Perspectives (MP) Mission Pillar Requirement
  • Nine units of Upper Division General Education (UDGE) courses, one each in Areas UDGE-B, UDGE-C, and UDGE-D
  • Free electives as needed to meet minimum units for graduation
