The main objective for the Liberal Studies Program is to provide a well-rounded education across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and arts. It is designed to develop critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills. As an interdisciplinary undergraduate program focusing on a wide range of content knowledge, it is instrumental to prepare students for elementary teaching, law, or business professions.    

There are three Liberal Studies Major Degree options and two minor options in our Liberal Studies Program, see below.

Our Mission  

The School of Education at California State University Channel Islands works collaboratively with communities to prepare culturally sustaining educators who inspire learning and promote belonging, equity, accessibility, and justice.

Program Outcomes 

Within the three Liberal Studies degree options, two are related to content knowledge acquisition and specific development for working in elementary education environment.  The third is for broader outcomes, for example in law, counseling, health and other similar professions.  Thus, some of the program outcomes are specific to the degree program while others are generic across all three:  

For all Liberal Studies Degree Program Outcomes students will have 

  • The ability to analyze oral or written communication for accuracy of content, logic of argument, and clarity of reasoning. 

  • The capacity to function in multidisciplinary teams and collaborative environments centered around a common purpose.  

  • Developed recognition of the need for and the ability to engage in lifelong learning. 

  • The ability to analyze socio-cultural issues including race, class, ethnicity, gender, and language and discuss general societal issues and issues related to education specifically.  

  • An understanding of the historical and philosophical foundations of education in the United States and the current social and political issues pertaining education.  

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer literacy, information literacy, and technological literacy. 

  • Demonstrated the capacity to lead others in addressing issues of public concern. 

  • Evaluated and examined societal and specifically education issues from multiple cultural and international perspectives. 

Specific to Elementary Teaching Outcomes the students will have  

  • Acquired the content knowledge preparation for the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET), which is necessary for teaching grades K-8 and for admission into the Multiple-Subject and Education Specialist Teaching Credential Programs.  

  • Benefited from hands-on, practical classroom experiences the program offers.  The classroom experiences are integrated with coursework and demonstrate the pedagogical knowledge, skills, and dispositions required to teach in grades K-8. 

  • Acquired the prerequisite requirements to seek the Bilingual Language Authorization with their credential.
