Department overview

The Cal State Channel Islands Department of Economics is quantitatively focused with an aim towards producing students with a strong applied econometric skillset. This skillset is built early with the foundational 6-unit sequence in econometrics by the end of which students are expected to have authored an original piece of econometric research. This experience then feeds naturally into an upper-division seminar course in which the student will be acquainted with current applied research. Finally, students cap-off their degree with an independent capstone research project that takes advantage of our small class sizes to provide students with direct mentorship from tenured economics faculty.

Students interested in graduating with a thorough understanding of applied econometrics who are not afraid to challenge themselves in a rigorous program that holds students to a high standard are encouraged to apply. Graduates have gone on to long, successful careers in economic consulting, finance, environmental economics, and many other intellectually engaging and exciting fields.

Student Opportunities

Thanks to a generous grant from the Institute for Global Economic Research (IGER) Foundation, students are also able to earn units working with faculty to conduct research of benefit various NGOs and non-profit institutions. Research assistant positions are readily available to motivated students seeking to further build their applied skills as they conduct real, hands-on, publishable research.
