AAS 304 - Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Community

Three hours lecture per week
An examination of the major histories and issues of Oceania from the perspectives of Pacific Islanders in their homelands and in the diaspora. It examines the experiences of communities from Hawaiʻi, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, Guam, the Marshall Islands, Fiji, and Aotearoa, among others. Topics include colonialism, neocolonialism, and militarization; sovereignty and decolonization movements; tourism and cultural representation; and issues of gender, sexuality, mixed race, and identity. Emphasis is placed on the interconnectedness of Pacific Island peoples and their ongoing struggles for cultural survival, social justice, self-determination, and cultural transformations in the diaspora.
