SOC 339 - Through the Smoke: The History, Science, Politics, and Culture of Weed Units: 3 Three hours lecture per week Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Golden Four GE Areas (1A, 1B, 1C, 2) This interdisciplinary class examines recreational and medicinal cannabis use in society. Students will learn historical uses of cannabis and the socio-historical processes by which cannabis became criminalized and then decriminalized in some places, the botanical components of cannabis and chemistry of how it affects the body, and examine cannabis and the cannabis industry as a social phenomenon. Special attention will be paid to power, and racial and socioeconomic inequalities in the criminalization, regulation, and enforcement of cannabis.
