ESRM 345 - Power, Privilege, and the Planet

Units: 3
Three hours lecture per week
Prerequisite(s): ESRM 250
This course will use a critical environmental justice lens to examine the intersections of power, privilege and the environmental processes they impact at the local, national and global scale. We will explore the ways in which historical and contemporary inequities shape environmental challenges, influence mitigation responses, and give rise to crucial movements, scholarship and organizations dedicated to addressing these injustices. Through interdisciplinary case studies, reflective readings and engaging discussions students will learn to identify who the powerholders are, the importance of place-based context of the environmental issues, whose voices are marginalized and centered, and how this contributes to the efficacy of resulting management decisions.
Graded: Letter Grade
