English: Technical Writing Certificate - 16-18 units

The Certificate is open to all students. For students who are seeking the BA in English , the 12 units of elective requirements can be double counted towards this certificate.
The Certificate in Technical Writing is designed to provide students who are interested in the use of technical writing with industry skills and knowledge. Specifically, by completion of the program, certificate students will be able to:
- Create professional written, oral, and visual communication for specific purposes and diverse audiences and contexts.
- Apply structural and stylistic conventions appropriate to the industry.
- Employ industry-specific software to design, create, and/or select multimedia components and integrate them into print, broadcast, and online media-rich resources.
- Gain access to scientific and technical concepts using research techniques and translate the concepts into relatable ideas in natural language.
- Apply the process of writing and the processes of the industry to develop technical documents in a variety of contexts.
- Utilize professional communication skills both collaboratively and individually to produce materials, resolve problems and formulate solutions.
- Prepare for employment opportunities in technical writing locally, regionally, and nationally.

The certificate requires the following: 16-18 units
(Note that students may not double count courses in the certificate toward their required sequence in the English major; however, ENGL 330 is in the upper division core and ENGL 480, 482 and 483 are English electives, and these may count toward both the major and the certificate.)
