Requirements For the Concentrated Studies Emphasis - 57 units


This emphasis consists of a 12 unit Core, a 42 unit Program of Study, and a 3 unit Capstone. In order for a student to have their Program of Study approved, it must be developed with a tenure-track faculty advisor. General Education may not be double-counted with the requirements for this emphasis.

Required Core Courses - 12 units


Choose one course from each of the following four core areas.


1. Interdisciplinary Perspectives - 3 units

2. Experiential Service Learning - 3 units

3. Multicultural Perspectives - 3 units

Program of Study - 42 units


The Program of Study must be arranged with a faculty advisor. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue a minor as part of the Program of Study. A minimum of 24 units must be upper-division. Community college courses may be used in the Program of Study provided they are approved by the faculty advisor and are not used to meet General Education or the American Institutions Requirements. Students must select a faculty advisor within the first 60 days after they begin taking coursework at CI and submit their initial Program of Study to the Advising Center.

Capstone - 3 units


All students must enroll in either LS 490  or LS 499  during the final year prior to graduation.

(The Capstone Course or Project (LS 490  or LS 499 ) must be passed with a grade of “B” or better.)

Additional General Education and other Graduation Requirements - 63 units


To graduate, students must complete 120 units minimum (40 units must be upper division) including all General Education  (GE) and Graduation Requirements .  The following areas must be included:

  • Additional lower division A-E GE requirements not met within major
  • Nine units of Upper Division Interdisciplinary GE (UDIGE) courses, numbered 330-349 or 430-449. Six units may be within major, three units must be outside major (C or better grades)
  • Multicultural Requirement (C or better grade)
  • Language Requirement (C or better grade)
  • American Institutions Requirement
  • Free electives as needed to meet minimum units for graduation
