Option in Creative Writing - 15 units


The Creative Writing Option gives the English major an opportunity to pursue different forms of creative writing. Generally, the student, in consultation with his or her Capstone professor, will focus on and deepen work in a chosen genre for the final Capstone course. In addition, the Creative Writing Project offers the student experience in editing and producing the CI literary journal. The 12 units of electives that are requirements for the English major are incorporated into this option and there is no need for an additional 12 units.

Lower Division Requirements - 12 units


In addition to the courses below, students seeking the Bachelor of Arts in English must have fulfilled the lower division writing requirement (at CI, ENGL 103  or ENGL 105  ).

The 12 units of lower division literature courses have been designed as an introduction to diverse perspectives in the field of English that frame literary texts, structure, and relationships in different ways.

Students should select a total of 12 units of lower division coursework with a minimum of one course (3 units) in each subcategory.
 

Upper Division Requirements - 24 units


The upper division English core is designed to provide students with a broad background in literature, solid foundations in theory and criticism, and experience in writing to learn.

Additional General Education and other Graduation Requirements - 69 units


To graduate, students must complete 120 units minimum (40 units must be upper division) including all General Education  (GE) and Graduation Requirements  .  The following areas must be included:

  • Additional Lower Division A-E (GE) Requirements not met within the major
  • Nine units of Upper Division Upper Division Interdisciplinary GE (UDIGE), courses are numbered 330-349 and 430-449. Six units may be within the major, 3 units must be outside the major (C or better grade)
  • Multicultural Requirement (C or better grade)
  • Language Requirement (C or better grade)
  • American Institutions Requirement
  • Free electives as needed to meet minimum units for graduation
