Department Mission
Through reflective practice and critical lenses, we prepare leaders and practitioners to respond to community needs effectively and develop dynamic, sustainable solutions to address real-world challenges. By fostering a culture of innovation and respect, we empower our graduates to take thoughtful actions that create positive impact, ensuring a better future for all.
Department Overview
Our department began in the 2023-24 academic year with two Master of Arts in Education with educational leadership emphases programs that had operated for two decades. Two new programs were added to the department in the 2024-25 academic year.
The Master of Science in School Counseling with Pupil Personnel Services Credential was approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the CSU Chancellor’s Office in 2024-2025. The program welcomed its first cohort into a two-year, in-person, cohort-based model designed to prepare professionals for careers in school mental health and academic counseling in public schools. The program is also a member of the California School Counselor Residency Program within the Ventura County Consortium of School Districts, which emphasizes service to at-promise students in high-need schools.
In the 2024-25 academic year, the Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Equity and Justice received approval from the CSU Chancellor’s Office and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) to offer the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. This three-year, asynchronous, online, cohort-based program is designed for working professionals and centers on equity and justice in educational leadership. Graduates are prepared for advanced leadership roles in preschool-12th grade education, community colleges, and universities, where they apply critical perspectives to advance transformative, equity-driven change. An integral feature of the program is the annual one-week, on-campus summer residency, which fosters strong relationships among doctoral students and faculty.
This department emphasizes career development for leadership and counseling professionals to create positive impact and ensure a better future for all.
