Senate Resolution Whereas shared governance is a long accepted and essential manner of decision making in higher education, as recognized by the Constitution of the Academic Senate at CSU Channel Islands, the Academic Senate of the CSU, the CSU, the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA), and by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities; and
Whereas we all mutually benefit from faculty perspectives being shared with administration, and administration perspectives being shared with faculty at all levels of decision making in the university; and
Whereas the President’s Cabinet is a primary decision making body on our campus that does not have a faculty representative; and
Whereas the Academic Senate of CSU Channel Islands is the representative body of the faculty on all matters within scope of the faculty, and the Chair of the Senate is elected by the faculty to represent the faculty on these matters; and
Whereas the Constitution of the CI Academic Senate designates the Academic Senate as responsible for a broad range of matters on which to recommend policy to the campus president, including being the “primary source” of policy recommendations on strategic planning for the university; and
Resolved, the faculty of California State University Channel Islands ask President Erika Beck to include the Chair of the Academic Senate as part of her Cabinet; and
Resolved, that this be distributed to President Richard Rush, incoming President Erika Beck, Provost Gayle Hutchinson, and the incoming Interim Provost.
