Purpose: To end the use of General (State) Funds for the support of the Institute of Global Economic Research (IGER), which was established by the Academic Senate to be a self-sustaining Institute.
Senate Resolution Whereas CSU Channel Islands (CI) begins its mission statement with the words “Placing students at the center of the educational experience” and defines student-centeredness as “Ensuring that students’ best interests are at the center of all University decisions”; and
Whereas the Institute for Global Economic Research (IGER) in its founding documents was to be a self-sustaining institute after three years, yet instead after six years costs the University hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in salaries, benefits, and support; and
Whereas the Fiscal Policies Committee for several years has to no avail questioned the use of General Funds for what was presented to the Academic Senate as a self-sustaining Institute; and
Whereas the IGER Director was supposed to share his expertise with students, yet has not taught state-supported courses in over five (5) years nor led student-research in those courses as intended; and
Whereas IGER is not student-centered and CI faces limited funding and difficult resource decisions; be it
Resolved that the Academic Senate of CI calls on President Rush not to allow any more state funds to be diverted to support salaries, benefits, or operating expenses of IGER or its Director; and
Resolved that those state monies be used to support student-centered actions, such as hiring faculty who teach state-supported classes or funding high-impact practices that benefit students; and
Resolved that this resolution be distributed to President Richard R. Rush, Provost Gayle Hutchinson, VP for Business and Financial Affairs Ysabel Trinidad, CSU Chancellor Timothy White, and CSU EVC for Academic and Student Affairs Loren Blanchard.
