Approve Date: November 12, 2013
Policy File:
SP 13-02 Policy on Undergraduate Unit Load Limitation

Drafted By: Student Academic Policies and Procedures: Sean Carswell, Gina Farrar, Erich Fleming, Tiina Itkonen (Co-Chair), Christina Smith, Cindy Wyels (Chair)
Purpose: To establish unit load limitations for undergraduate students

Background: SP 03-04 establishes unit load limitations for undergraduate students and provides a means for exceeding such limitations. This revised policy maintains existing policy for students in good academic standing while creating a lower unit load limitation for students on academic probation. It also includes a procedure that students on academic probation may pursue to exceed the new limitation.

Applicability: All CSU Channel Islands undergraduate students

Policy:
  1. An undergraduate student in good academic standing may enroll in up to 18 units without advisor approval.
  2. An undergraduate student on academic probation may enroll in up to 13 units without advisor approval.
  3. Undergraduate students in good academic standing who wish to enroll in more than 18 units are required to have
    1. written approval from the chair or a faculty advisor in the student’s declared major, as specified by the major program, or
    2. written approval from an academic advisor if the student has not yet declared a major.
  4. Undergraduate students on academic probation who wish to enroll in more than 13 units are required to have an academic advisor’s written approval.
