SP 01-47 - Student Peer Mentor Program (Formerly “SR 47-01”)

Approve Date: December 14, 2001
Policy File:
SP 01-47 Student Peer Mentor Program (Formerly “SR 47-01”)

Policy:
Motion: That the Senate recommends the creation of a Student Peer Mentor Program

Description: Instructors of approved courses may request their courses be included in the Peer Mentor program. The provisions of that program are as follows:

1. Mentors for courses are chosen bv the course instructor from a list of students who have applied for the program and who have met the minimum requirements.

2. To be considered for the Mentor program, a student must have completed the course for which he or she wishes to mentor with a grade of “B” or better.

3. Mentors must take a short preparatory, non-credit training before the semester during which they will act as a mentor begins and meet as a group at regularly specified times during the semester. This will prepare them to accept the responsibility of mentoring a group of approximately ten students.

4. Mentors will lead their assigned students in discussion, provide tutoring on a scheduled basis, and generally take the students “under their wings” in order to make their charges’ transitions to the university more smooth. In addition, students will receive exposure to library and computer skills and student affairs presentations.

5. The Academic Senate will investigate the possibility of mentors receiving course credit and/or partial tuition waivers for their services. (possibilities include EOP, Work Study, Service Learning and others.)
