Policy File:
SP 03-32 Policy on Forgiveness of Previously Earned Grade (superseded by SP 12-02)

Purpose: The proposed policy would replace our existing Forgiveness of Previously Earned Grade Policy. The purpose of the new policy is to try to reduce the number of units that graduates of CSUCI have at the time of graduation as suggested by the CSU Academic Senate Budget Analysis Task Force.

Background: Our existing forgiveness policy allows so many units to be repeated that it may encourage students to repeat courses even when not necessary and increase the total number of units completed by graduation.

Applicability: This policy applies to all CSUCI undergraduate students.

Policy:
The Forgiveness of Previously Earned Grade Policy may be used only by undergraduate students. It may not be used by graduate/postbaccalaureate students working on master’s degrees, graduate certificates, teaching credentials or by unclassified postbaccalaureate students, even when they might take undergraduate courses.

In the case of a repeated course, the subsequent grade is substituted for the earlier one in the computation of writs attempted and grade point average. The previous course grade(s) remain(s) on the record, but isIare annotated as being discounted from grade point average calculations.

2. This policy applies only to courses taken at CSUCI and repeated at CSUCI
A student may repeat up to a total of eighteen (18) semester units taken at CSUCI, for forgiveness. Beyond 18 semester units, all grades received will be averaged into the GPA.

4. This policy may be used only on grades of “WU,” “F,” 0-, “0,” “0+,” “C-,” “IC.”

5. This policy may not be used on grades of ” A+” , “ A”, “A-“, “B+”, “B”, “B-“, ” C +”, ” C “, “I”.

6. A grade assigned as a result of student disciplinary procedures cannot be forgiven and will be computed in the grade point average.
