SP 10-13 - Policy on Degrees Awarded Posthumously (Supersedes SP 06-10)

Policy File:
SP 10-13 Policy on Degrees Awarded Posthumously

Drafted By: Student Academic Policies and Procedures Committee
Purpose: To expand the current policy on the awarding of posthumous degrees to include Master’s Degree level students

Background: Our existing policy on degrees awarded posthumously did not include criteria for granting graduate level degrees. Subsequently, the revision will separate the two distinct student populations by their individual criteria.

Applicability: All CSUCI Students

Policy:

Baccalaureate Policy:

A posthumous degree may be awarded if a student in good standing completed a) 30 units in residence; b) 60 units overall; c) 20 units in the declared major, and had a G.P.A. of at least 2.0. The Provost/VPAA may initiate a request for the awarding of the posthumous degree by communicating in writing with the Records and Registration office. Final authority for approval lies with the President or designee.

Master’s Degree Policy:

A posthumous degree may be awarded if the student, at the time of death, accomplished the following: a) satisfactorily completed at least 15 units of graduate (500 level) coursework in residence; b) was within 6 semester units of finishing the number of units necessary for completion of an approved master’s degree study plan; c) was in good standing with a 3.00 GPA. The Provost/VPAA may initiate a request for the awarding of the posthumous degree by communicating in writing with the Records and Registration office. Final authority for approval lies with the President or designee.
