Policy File:
SP10-08 Military Service Credit

Purpose: To establish a policy whereby academic credit can be awarded for educational experience during military service as established in EO 1036

Background: Executive Order 1036 “Systemwide Admission Eligibility and/or Baccalaureate Credit Awarded for External Examinations, Experiential Learning, and Instruction in Non-Collegiate Settings”
gives campuses power to award credit based on external examinations and experiences. This policy outlines how educational experience during military service will be awarded on the CI campus based on the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE) document, “Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services,” referenced in Executive order 1036.

Applicability: CI students

Policy:
Students shall be granted credit toward the Baccalaureate degree based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. Three units of General Education Area E credit will be awarded for military basic training with any additional credit for basic training recommended by the ACE Guide given as free electives.
In addition, up to 30 credits may be awarded as a combination of free electives based on ACE recommendations and/or the following specific credits:
1)
Three to four units of General Education Area C3a credit will be awarded for Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center proficiency exams based on ACE’s guidelines in the National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training. Any additional credit for language proficiency recommended by the ACE Guide will count as free electives.
2)
Major or other General Education credit may be awarded by petition.
Students should contact Enrollment Services for instructions on receiving credit.
