Course Credit


Advanced Placement (AP) Examination Credit

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students who successfully pass the College Board’s AP examinations with scores of three or higher. More specific information regarding CI credit granted for past and current exams is available on the Registrar’s Office website. For more information about ordering score reports, visit the AP website. College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students who successfully pass the College Board’s CLEP examinations with scores of 50 or higher. More specific information regarding CI credit granted for past and current exams is available on the Registrar’s Office website. For more information about ordering exam score transcripts, visit the CLEP website. Transcripts may be sent to: Registrar’s Office, Sage Hall, First Floor, 1 University Drive, Camarillo, CA 93012.

Students may also earn course credit by taking challenge examinations developed at CI. Credit shall be awarded to students who successfully pass the exams, will be recorded as “CR” on the student’s transcript, and will be counted toward the total number of units required for the degree, but will not be included in any grade point average calculations. Credit by examination may not be used to fulfill the minimum residence requirement.

Credit for Non-collegiate Instruction

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students who successfully complete either military or civilian non-collegiate instruction, which is appropriate for the baccalaureate degree and has been recommended by the American Council on Education’s (ACE’s) Commission on Educational Credit and Credentials. The number of units granted are those recommended in the ACE Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services and the ACE National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training. More specific information regarding CI credit granted is available on the Registrar’s Office website.

Credit for U.S. Military Service

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students who submit evidence (DD 214 or DD 295) of satisfactory completion of Basic Training. Students with service in the U.S. Air Force, Army, or Coast Guard will receive four semester units of credit, and students with service in the U.S. Marine Corps will receive eight semester units of credit. Credit is granted in accordance with the recommendation by the American Council on Education (ACE). Other military courses completed may earn baccalaureate credit as outlined in the ACE Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. CI has final discretion on how these units will be applied. More specific information regarding CI credit granted is available on the Registrar’s Office website.

Credit for U.S. Military Service, Academic

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services (Guide). Three units of General Education Area E credit will be awarded for military basic training with any additional credit for basic training recommended by the ACE Guide awarded as free electives.

In addition, up to thirty units may be awarded as a combination of free electives based on ACE recommendations and/or the following specific credits:

  1. Three to four units of General Education Area C2: Language credit will be awarded for Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center proficiency exams based on ACE’s guidelines in the National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training (Guide). Any additional credit for language proficiency recommended by the ACE Guide will count as free electives.
  2. Major or other General Education credit may be awarded by substitution requests.

Credits Toward Graduation for Courses Taken Outside CI

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students who successfully complete courses taken outside of CI as follows:

Transfer of Undergraduate and Graduate Credit from Another Accredited Institution

Students who were in good standing at another accredited institution may, within maximums, transfer credit for baccalaureate or graduate degree course work. Course equivalency for major requirements is subject to the determination and discretion of the University. Students are cautioned that while the University will accept transferred courses for unit credit towards admission, it is under no obligation to accept those same courses for subject credit to fulfill requirements. Policy regarding transfer of courses from California Community Colleges differs in some respects. Individual program rules regarding specific transfer limitations should be consulted.

Transfer of Undergraduate Credit from Accredited Community Colleges

A maximum of seventy semester units earned at a community college may be applied toward the baccalaureate degree, with the following limitations and stipulations:

  1. No upper-division credit may be allowed for courses taken at a community college;
  2. No credit may be allowed for professional courses in education taken at a community college, other than introduction to education courses;
  3. Students who complete a general education certification are still required to complete at least nine units of Upper Division General Education (UDGE) courses within the CSU (CSUCI or other CSU campus).

International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination Credit

CI grants undergraduate degree credit to students who successfully pass IB examinations at the Higher Level (HL) with scores of four or higher. International Program Credit

Course credit earned at universities abroad may be accepted for undergraduate degree credit at CI subject to evaluation by Admissions & Recruitment. Specific course equivalencies may require consultation with individual major or minor advisors. CI students who desire to take courses at a foreign university for degree credit must have written approval of such courses by their major and/or minor advisor prior to taking them.
