Liberal Studies, B.A. Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis - 133-135 units

Special Grade and GPA Requirement:
A minimum grade of “C+” in all major courses and a minimum GPA of 3.0 “B” are required to remain in the Emphasis.

Upper Division Requirements - 40 units


Required Liberal Studies Concentration - 9-10 units


Nine to ten additional units must be taken from one of the following concentrations:
Bilingual Authorization (9-10), History and Social Science (9), Human Development and Psychology (9), Mathematics (9-10), Physical Education and Health (9), Reading, Language and Literature (9), Science (9-10), Special Education (9), Visual and Performing Arts (9)

1. Bilingual Authorization Concentration - 9-10 units


The Bilingual Authorization Concentration will help prepare students for the Bilingual Authorization examination leading to bilingual certification.

For the Liberal Studies major, there is no individual concentration course grade requirement. However, all courses must be completed with a grade of C+ or better to be counted towards a Bilingual Authorization.

Once you are in a Credential Program, you will take two additional credential-level courses, EDML 563 and EDML 564, to obtain a waiver to take any examinations for bilingual authorization.

2. History and Social Science Concentration - 9 units


The History and Social Science Concentration will be of particular interest to students wanting to focus on the History and Social Science disciplines, and will be good preparation for anyone wanting to teach Social Studies in middle school.

Required Course - 3 units


Select two courses, one each from two different disciplines - 6 units


Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science or Sociology

Consider choosing one Upper Division Interdisciplinary General Education (UDIGE) course (numbered 330-349 or 430-449).

3. Human Development and Psychology Concentration - 9 units


The Human Development and Psychology Concentration will be useful for students with an interest in issues of human development and will help build a strong background for working with students in the classroom.

4. Mathematics Concentration 9-10 units


The Mathematics Concentration will be useful for students with an interest in Mathematics and Science and will help build a strong background for teaching Mathematics.

Students should meet with a Mathematics Faculty Advisor to design their Mathematics Concentration. With advice from a Mathematics Faculty Advisor, it may be possible to complete enough courses to qualify for a Foundational Mathematics Minor to teach middle school.

Required Course - 3 units


Select two from the following - 6-7 units


Lower-division courses in this Concentration may be substituted with transferable community college courses. Students should work with their Liberal Studies Faculty Advisor to identify the courses that may be used to meet the Concentration requirements.

5. Physical Education and Health Concentration - 9 units


The Physical Education and Health Concentration will be of use to students with an interest in sports, Kinesiology and physical development.

6. Reading, Language and Literature Concentration - 9 units


The Reading, Language and Literature Concentration will be helpful for students with an interest in Literature and Communication, and will help build a good background for teaching Language Arts.

Select a minimum of nine units; at least three of the nine units must be upper division. (Consider choosing two upper division courses; one of the courses should be an Upper Division Interdisciplinary General Education (UDIGE) course (numbered 330-349 or 430-449).

Students must take one course from each domain.

7. Science Concentration - 9-10 units


The Science Concentration is designed to provide depth of study in the general area of Science and to prepare a future teacher to specialize in Science-teaching. Students are strongly encouraged to take courses from at least two different disciplines, e.g., BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, and PHYS, etc.

Select a minimum of nine Science units: at least three of the nine units must be upper division; at least one of the courses must have a laboratory component; two of the courses must be three units; one can be four units (Consider choosing one Upper Division Interdisciplinary General Education (UDIGE) course (numbered 330-349 or 430-449).

Lower-division courses in this Concentration may be substituted with transferable community college courses. Students should work with their Faculty Advisor to identify the courses that will be used to meet the Concentration requirements.

8. Special Education Concentration - 9 units


The Special Education Concentration will be useful for students with an interest in the issues of Disabilities and Education. It will help build a strong background for working with students who have disabilities in the classroom.

Substitution of a lower-division community college course for one upper-division requirement in the Concentration may be possible. Students should work with their Faculty Advisor to identify the courses that may be used to meet the Concentration requirements.

9. Visual and Performing Arts Concentration - 9 units


The Visual and Performing Arts Concentration will be useful for students with an interest in any aspect of the Arts and will help build a strong background for teaching the Arts.

Select a minimum of nine units from Visual and Performing Arts, e.g., ART, PA, PAMU, PATH, PADA, etc. or any GE category C1 course - at least three of the nine units must be upper division. (Consider choosing two upper division courses; one of the courses should be an Upper Division Interdisciplinary General Education (UDIGE) course (numbered 330-349 or 430-449).

Additional General Education and other Graduation Requirements - 6-7 units


To graduate, students must complete 120 units minimum (40 units must be upper division) including all General Education  (GE) and Graduation Requirements . All GE and Graduation Requirments should be met within major except for the following areas:

  • Additional Lower Division A-E (GE) Requirements not met within major - 6-7 units
    • Any GE Area A3: Critical Thinking course Units: 3 (UNIV 210 recommended)
    • Any GE Area C3a: Language course Units: 3-4 (C or better grade; Spanish recommended)

Requirements for Admission to the Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis


Students must be accepted into the Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis prior to enrolling in the 400-level EDAP courses. Students may apply for admission in the first semester of their junior year after completing 60 units in the Liberal Studies Program. Admission will be granted based upon completing the following requirements. Applications and advising are available in the CI Credential Office.

  1. Examinations - Students must pass either the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET-MS), or the CSET-MS with writing skills test prior to admission to the Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis.
  2. Grade Point Average - Students must pass all prerequisite courses with no grade lower than a “C.” A cumulative grade point average of 2.67 overall or 2.75 in the last 60 units or better is required for admission to the Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis.
  3. Health Clearance - Evidence of a negative tuberculin test is required. The tuberculin test is valid for four years and must be valid through student teaching. The tuberculin test may be completed at a private physician’s office, the county health department, or the CI Student Health Center.
  4. Certificate of Clearance - Students must possess or apply for a valid Certificate of Clearance as part of admission. A copy of an emergency permit satisfies the clearance requirement. The Certificate of Clearance is a background check and clearance conducted by the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  5. One set of official transcripts - One set of official transcripts with a list of courses in progress must be submitted to the Credential Office with the Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis application.
  6. Two Letters of Recommendation - Two letters of recommendation from faculty, employers, and/or others who are knowledgeable about the student’s personal qualities and potential to work with children must be submitted with the Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis application.
  7. Experience - At least 45 hours of documented field experience in a K-8 classroom, or an equivalent documented field experience, must be completed.
  8. Writing Sample - Writing samples are required as part of the application process. The writing sample includes a 500-600 word essay describing the applicant’s interest in teaching children with the diversity of languages and cultures represented in California schools.
  9. Interview - The Integrated Teaching Credential Emphasis admissions committee will interview candidates once all other portions of the admissions requirements are complete.
