ANTH 323 - Native Americans of California to the 1850’s

Three hours lecture per week
Examines the development of Native American peoples and cultures in California as they adapted to diverse environments. The environmental history of the last glacial and postglacial periods will be examined to provide a backdrop for human history. Using archaeological, historical, and ethnographic sources, the culture history of California’s Native Americans will be traced from antiquity to the 1850’s. The impact of Spanish exploration, colonization, and the mission system will be traced from the perspectives of both the Native Americans and their colonizers.
