The Financial Aid & Scholarships office assists students in obtaining financial aid resources to meet their educational costs. Students interested in applying for federal financial aid must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or a Dream Act Application at dream.csac.ca.gov.  A variety of financial aid resources are available to students, including grants, loans, federal work study, and scholarships. Students must complete and submit a FAFSA to be considered for federal and state grants and loans. Dream Act students interested in applying for state grants and private scholarships must submit a Dream Act Application. Please refer to the Financial Aid website.

Federal & State Grants

Federal or state grant funds that do not have to be repaid:

  • Federal Pell Grants are awarded to eligible undergraduate students with financial need who are working on a first bachelor’s degree or students pursuing an initial teaching credential.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are awarded to undergraduate students who have exceptional financial need. Due to limited funding students must file by the priority deadline of each year to be considered and funds are subject to availability.
  • Cal Grants are state-funded grants awarded to California residents by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). Cal Grant awards pay the state fee portion of in-state resident fees and/or provide funds for additional educational expenses such as books and supplies.
  • State University Grant (SUG) is a state-funded program that provides grants to assist students with state university fees. SUG is awarded to undergraduate students who are California residents and have financial aid eligibility. If you receive other grants designated to pay University fees, such as the Cal Grant, your SUG will be replaced by those grants. Due to limited funding students must file by the priority deadline of each year to be considered and must meet SUG eligibility requirements.
  • Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) provides undergraduate students with family incomes up to $150,000 a scholarship to attend the California State University (CSU). The MSC may be up to 40% of the mandatory system wide tuition and fees.
  • Please note: Students who are eligible under AB540 (AB130 & AB131 Dream Act) guidelines may qualify for Cal Grant and/or other state-funded or privately funded awards. AB540 eligible students must submit a Dream Act Application each year by the priority filing deadline to be considered.

Federal Direct Loans

Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans are federal student loans for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education at a four-year college or university, community college, or trade, career, or technical school. The U.S. Department of Education offers eligible students at participating schools Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized Loans.

Direct Loan - A federal student loan, made through the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program, for which eligible students and parents borrow directly from the U.S. Department of Education at participating schools. Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans and Direct Consolidation Loans are different types of Direct Loans.

PLUS Loans are federal loans that graduate or professional degree students and parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay educational expenses. The U.S. Department of Education makes Direct PLUS Loans to eligible borrowers through schools participating in the Direct Loan Program.

Direct Plus Loan - A loan made by the U.S. Department of Education to graduate or professional students and parents of dependent undergraduate students for which the borrower is fully responsible for paying the interest regardless of the loan status.
